Giving From the Heart

Grace & Courtesy is one of the fundamental concepts of social structure for Montessori.  It helps the child develop order, vocabulary, actions and steps.  Our children have been practicing service through cracking peanuts and offering them to others in their classroom community.

To provide service for others brings self joy and teaches awareness of self and community.  This aligns with our philosophy and vision at Little Genius Montessori.  One of our goals is for children to grow into productive citizens of society.  We are continually empowering our future to utilize the skills necessary to serve both individual interests and all of humanity, beginning in the classroom community.

For Thanksgiving, our children gave thanks to their families by making homemade apple pie and pumpkin pie.  They were able to measure, combine ingredients, mix, roll out crust, and put the finishing touches on each pie.  The finished products were not only delicious, but symbolized genuine giving from the heart.

Now enrolling infants, toddlers, and primary preschoolers!  Contact us (503-492-8500) today to schedule a tour.

Building Blocks of the Future

"We believe that tomorrow’s future is in the hands of today’s children.  Establishing the right foundation at a young age guarantees little minds grow into little geniuses." - Little Genius Montessori's Mission

Montessori establishes the foundation of growth for absorbent young minds by providing fundamental building blocks through a prepared, child-size environment.  The five areas of particular focus are practical life, geography/cultural studies, sensorial, language and mathematics.
Each "work" is designed to add a deeper understanding of individual layers, allowing for freedom within limits.  The child is first introduced to each work (it is called work because the children are working with their hands) by watching someone who has mastered it, then doing the work with minimal assistance and lastly, completing the work alone.  This process allows for the child to move from unconscious learning to conscious learning, it is seen by the child curiously asking questions during the process.  The prepared environment is set up for the child to continue building on the fundamental blocks of real life.

Releasing The Butterflies

After watching the caterpillars transform into beautiful butterflies, the children were able to finally release them.  The toddlers were good at holding their pointer fingers out to let the butterfly crawl on their finger & quietly watched it fly away.  The primary preschoolers were very excited to see the butterfly fly!  They chased after both butterflies as they fluttered away.

It was a great learning opportunity for them to visually see the transformation of each stage of the butterfly process!

From Larvae to Caterpillars....

For science observations, the children are observing & drawing the butterfly life cycle.  The butterflies start as tiny larvae & grow into huge caterpillars.  The next stages will be the chrysalid phase then they will continue to morph into beautiful butterflies.

Gardening - April showers bring May flowers

Last week the children planted seeds into soil indoors & this week they started sprouting!  It is a very exciting time for them to see the beginning of the flower & plant process; the work they put in is paying off.

When the plants are strong enough to withstand outdoor temperatures, the children will transfer the small plants into their own recycled tire.  They will be responsible for watering & taking care of the flowers to continue the plant life cycle.  At Little Genius Montessori, we believe that tomorrow's future is in the hands of today's children - just as the flowers they planted are!  Establishing the right foundation at a young age guarantees little minds grow into little geniuses.

COMING SOON - A Community Garden - from plant to table....AND - Watch Our Garden Grow

The Story Behind the Branch on the Wall

One of our 3-year old students brought her teacher a large branch outside and said, "can we use this for art?" They cut out leaves and flowers from paper that all of the children had previously painted and together punched holes to hang them from the branches.  The children strung cut string through the leaves and carefully placed them on the branches attached to the wall.  Here is the final product, consisting of art, nature, science, fine motor skills and creativity

Healthy Belly

All of our children love the healthy snacks & lunches that are provided.  Most of our food is homemade daily with quality ingredients (bet you won't find that any other place).  This weeks menu included pita pizzas with red peppers, homemade bean & cheese corn quesadillas, baked sweet potato chips and turkey lettuce wraps.   Our meals are nut free & are gluten sensitive for children with allergies (even slight).

And when we say we love our fruits & vegetables, we are serious!  Soon we will be planting our vegetable garden so the children will be able to see the process from seed to meals.  YUM!

Contact us if you are interested in your child becoming a Little Genius with a healthy belly!
